He published his Laws of Planetary Motion in 1609. He was instrumental in debunking the long-held view that the sun orbited the Earth. He realised that the orbits of the Earth and the other planets around the Sun were elliptical rather than purely circular. He discovered that because a planet’s orbit is elliptical, a planet’s speed in orbit around the Sun is not constant but varies within the elliptical orbit.     Hubble’s Galaxy American astronomer   Edwin Hubble is famous for Hubble’s Law which stated that the velocity of a galaxy increases with its distance from the Earth, implying that the Universe is expanding. Hubble is also known for providing evidence that formerly known ‘nebulae’ were actually galaxies beyond the Milky Way. He played a crucial role in establishing the field of extra-galactic astronomy. The orbiting Hubble Space Telescope is named in his honour.
